The Volcanic Azores Islands

Spectacular volcanoes form the nine Azores islands, which rise out of the northern Atlantic Ocean hundreds of miles west of Portugal. Volcanic eruptions and large earthquakes are a part of life in the Azores. Recently, I had the good fortune to admire impressive landscapes on two of the islands while hiking along miles of trails in this unique and highly scenic region.

Obsessed with Obsidian

Obsidian, smooth and shiny black volcanic glass, has fascinated humans for tens of thousands of years. Researchers believe that humans have a natural reaction to shininess that is tied to an innate need–specifically, water. The Eastern Sierra Nevada is a fabulous place to see dark obsidian, especially in areas where it is swirled and folded together with frothy pale gray pumice..
